The third region of the state of Jammu Kashmir, Leh Ladakh is a paradise for nature lovers. It is surprising to see what a variety of beauty mother nature has bestowed on this state. From the snow laden mountain peaks of Kashmir to barren cold desert of the Ladakh region, it is one visual treat for travelers.
Ladakh, specially is like a spell, one look at it and you are bound to be mesmerised. The stunning landscape, the precariously hillside perched monasteries and the people who look more Tibetan than Indian make Ladakh an enticing experience f or travellers.
The monasteries are the top attraction for Ladakh. There are actually two monastery circuits from Leh, the capital city. Taking these circuits, you can cover almost all the major monasteries. The first circuit will have you visiting monasteries like Shey, Thiksey, Stakna, Matto, Chembray,Tak-Tok and Hemis. The second one, on the other hand will let you explore Spituk, Phyang, Likir, Alchi, Ridzong and Lamayuru monasteries.
The Ladakh region is also wonderful for trekking. There are numerous trek routes that you can take to explore the far flung areas.
Another highlight of Ladakh are its festivals. The monasteries have their own annual events. Apart from that, there is the Sindhu Darshan festival in May-June, Ladakh festival in September and Losar in December-January that see huge number of people pouring in the region.
Leh can be reached by air and road. There is an airport in the capital city that receives flights from Delhi, Jammu and Chandigarh on regular basis. The road route connect Leh from Srinagar and Manali in Himachal Pradesh. The road routes are not open throughout the year, they are mainly open during May to November depending upon weather conditions. If you are planning a trip to Leh Ladakh, it is advisable to check the weather conditions first. Also keep in mind that Leh is situated at a high altitude so a couple of extra days is required for acclimatisation.
